Draw the Void
I closed my eyes and set out to imagine the emptiness. That was the beginning. There is a space between two objects; it can be a line, a point, a square or any shape. That is the emptiness I mean in my drawings. Forget the objects and meditate on what is in between.
The idea began as drawings on 7 × 7 cm handmade paper, each paired with a poem of my own, to become a book. It grew into free drawings on other materials — burlap, ceramics — made in a colourful, simple and spontaneous way.
Mukayu is a Japanese word meaning “non-existence”, “the natural state as it is”. Finding meaning in emptiness, and seeing the potential in a void, evokes an unadulterated utopia. An empty space is filled with light through its emptiness.
